Preventing e-way landslides: MSRDC calls for tenders :Hindustan Times

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd (MSRDC) has invited tenders for executing the rock-fall mitigation work — among its measures to protect commuters from landslides in the Khandala Ghat, on the Mumbai- Pune expressway.

The mitigation work includes setting up a wire-rope, grating hilly slopes and bolting rocks to the hill – all in a bid to check landslide incidence.
The MSRDC will incur expenses of Rs33 crore for this project.

Three l andslides on t he expressway since June 22 has killed three people and severely affected the movement of traffic on the busy highway.

As the nature of the work i s urgent, considering t he rain will continue for a few months, the MSRDC wants the potential contractor to finish the work in the next five months.

MSRDC officials and experts from the Geological Survey of India surveyed the ghat section to find patches that have loose rocks.

The geologists found that percolation of accumulated rain water is making the rocks loose. This has prompted the MSRDC to also build a drainage system to ensure rain water is dispersed into the valley.
