Road Towards Malad (E) Being Widened To 60Ft
Motorists entering Malad from the Western Express Highway (WEH) will heave a sigh of relief as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started work on widening a twolane road to four lanes. It will benefit motorists travelling between Malad and WEH, as well as vacationers heading to Aksa beach and Madh Island, and military vehicles heading to INS Hamla on Marve Road. But it has not been a cakewalk for the BMC as 57 structures have to be relocated to widen the road.
One of the entry points to Malad (E), via the WEH, and also one of the crucial points connecting Malad East to West, it had been a major bottleneck for many years. The ward office decided to widen Datta Mandir Road a few months back, but commercial and residential structures along the stretch were a major hurdle. It was then decided to relocate the structures. “Most of these residents lived in 225 sq ft rooms. They have now been given 270 sq ft rooms in Dahisar, while commercial establishments have been given space in Kurar village. It took us a while to convince the residents and it was not easy considering they have been there for several decades,“ said a senior civic official from P North ward. Besides, it took the BMC officials a long time to demolish most of the houses, which were stone masonry structures.
Gyanmurti Sharma, the BJP corporator from Malad, said the widening was much needed. “I have seen that the entry into Malad is congested with traffic most of the time. The BMC had to clear the stretch to smoothen traffic movement. However, it was important that some structures ahead had to be cleared so that traffic movement till Malad railway station would be eased,“ said Sharma BMC assistant commis sioner (P-North ward) D K Jain emphasized that easing traffic movement on the stretch was long needed.
“The road is used by several motorists entering from WEH into Malad as the suburb today has many corporate offices on the Malad-Goregoan Link Road. Vacationers to Aksa and Madh Island use this route frequently too. Heavy military vehicles heading towards INS Hamla also take this route. Therefore, our first priority is to make the road motorable,“ said Jain.
An asphalt road will be laid and the 20-foot road will be widened to 60 feet.
