NERUL: After months of protests by residents and political workers, the illegal slums and shops along the main nullah in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Cor poration (MIDC) area at Bonsari were finally demolished on Thursday.
The MIDC administration took steps to clear the area of unauthorised encroachments following the orders by Thane guardian minister Eknath Shinde. Shiv Sena workers from the area too followed up on the issue.
T here have been l arg escale encroachments in the city in MIDC and City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) areas. In Bonsari, the nullah was covered a few months back and illegal structures were constructed on it. A shop was in fact inaugurated in the presence of a politician recently.
Shiv Sena Shakha Pramukh Mahesh Kothivale, former corporator Ramaseth Waghmare and Santosh Netke had complained at Nerul ward office, a couple of months ago against the illegal constructions. The complaint was later made to the additional commissioner and municipal commissioner. Letters were also repeatedly written to the MIDC officials.
Kothivale said, “With little action being taken despite follow ups and protests, we decided to approach Shinde. He then issued orders for immediate removal of the illegal constructions. The order resulted in the MIDC waking up and taking strong action against the illegal structures in Bonsari area.”
He added, “We are glad that action has finally been taken against the illegal structures. The action is however incomplete and there are several more illegal structures in the area. MIDC needs to act against them too at the earliest.”
