The Central Railway (CR) on Thursday announced that the Parel Terminus rail way project was finally on track and will be completed by 2017.
Divisional Railway Manager Amitabh Ojha said the project will have an additional home platform with buffer ends for terminating slow trains, and the existing platform will be widened from 7.5m to 12m.
“There will be an additional bridge that will take commuters towards the eastern and the western side after crossing over the WR lines. An elevated deck for buses has also been proposed,“ he said. “The focus is to take the load off from Dadar Terminus and provide relief to commuters at Parel.“
Work on the project will begin late this year as a part of the additional fifth and sixth lines project, proposed between Mumbai CST and Kurla under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project 2.
“The new 408m platform will cater to 12car trains and will have island platform that can take two trains up and down at a time. It will be in addition to the existing platforms,“ a senior official said.
Another official said the line that is used to transport goods trains will be shifted farther west and a 12-car platform will come in its place.
Commuter traffic in Parel has grown significantly over the past few years, which made the extension project necessary.
CR TRAINS TO SLOW DOWN SEPT 1 12

“Trains will be slowed down throughout the day. Trains on the slow corridor will be slowed down to 30 kmph and the ones on the fast corridor to 60 kmph,“ Ojha said.
Badlapur, Bhandup, Mulund, four at Kurla, Mankhurd, Vidyavihar and Wadala Road will get escalators by March 2016.
