The city witnessed a massive protest on Friday against the resumed demolitions by the City and Industrial Development Cor poration (Cidco) this week.
The project-affected people (PAP) raised their voices against the planning body’s action on what they claim are need-based structures.
The protest at Sector 20 in Kharghar was led by Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) and supported by the Congress, Shiv Sena and Samajwadi Party.
The PAP, who had strongly opposed the demolition action by Cidco on Wednesday, had to be detained by the police to allow the action to proceed. PWP leader Balaram Patil was among those detained.
Protesting the demolition and the detention of the PAP, PWP leader Vivek Patil said, “I spoke to Cidco managing director Sanjay Bhatia last night and he said that Cidco is taking action according to the high court order and the report submitted by it on the illegal structures in the city.”
He added, “The question is whether the buildings termed ille gal by Cidco are indeed illegal or built by the PAP for residing and hence, qualify as need-based. We do not have problems with commercial buildings being demolished but not these.”
The PWP leader stated that they will continue to oppose this action against the PAP.
“If need be, we will get the December 2012 limit for needbased constructions t o be extended to 2015. We will also get Cidco to compensate for the buildings demolished by them,” said Patil.
On the other hand, Cidco has asked for cooperation from the residents of the city.
T he pl anning body has appealed to the residents to not support illegal constructions to help preserve the planned structure of the city.
The action to demolish the building is based on a high court order, said Mohan Ninawe, public relations officer, Cidco.
“The residents need to note that any attempt to stop the drive could lead to contempt of court action being taken against them,” said Ninawe.
