MUMBAI: The city’s waste woes may soon be over.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned a hi- tech solid waste management plant at Taloja on the same plot where the MMRDA plans to build a facility for six local civic bodies in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had planned a waste management plant on a 117-hectare plot at Taloja to dispose of the waste generated in Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali, BhiwandiNizampur, Ulhasnagar, Amber nath and Badlapur regions.
While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had refused to join the plant then, it has now asked the state gover nment for a part of the land to build its own facility.
“We have asked the state for part of the land in Taloja to build the plant. We will take up the project, once we get the land,” said Prakash Patil, deputy municipal commissioner, solid waste management department.
The urban development (UD) department, which is studying the proposal, is likely to allot 30% to 50% of the land to the BMC. The move may have an adverse impact on the project planned by the MMRDA to process 1,800 tonnes of waste daily.
The state government is now in the process of acquiring more land for the plan.
“We are in talks with the urban development department. The BMC may be given up to 50 hectares,” said a senior MMRDA official.
The MMRDA plans to separate the waste into bio-degradable and combustible categories. The bio-degradable material will be converted into compost, while the rest will be incinerated to produce electricity.
