The BMC has told the Bombay high court that a 14-storeyed building at Walkeshwar, vacant since over three decades, is in a “semi-finished“ condition and technical tests will have to be done to find out if it is in a proper state.
Construction of Walkeshwar Ruby , earlier called Sunil 100, was halted after it figured in the floor space scam in the '80s. The flat-owners are waiting since then for its demolition so it can be rebuilt legally.
On April 23, the court rapped BMC for its “casual inspection“ after the assistant engineer (D ward) visually inspected the building from out side and opined that it is structurally sound. The court directed BMC to “immediately ascertain through experts about the structural status of the building“. Also, the assistant engineer was told to re-visit and assess its structural status and submit a report. The June 26 affidavit filed by the assistant engineer said that after a re-visit and inspection it was “visually observed“ that the entire building is vacant except for a kindergarten on the first floor. It stated there are no cracks in the reinforced cement concrete, columns, beams and slab of the entire building but for a column on the fifth floor near a toilet. Also, steel portion of the hall (sic) on the 11th and 12th floors “is found exposed to weather“.“The staircase is in good condition without any cracks. The building is in a semi-finished condition,“ it said. The affida vit said since the building is vacant since long, it is necessary that technical tests be done to assure its proper condition.
