The industrial town of Boisar observed a daylong bandh on Thursday to protest the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation's (MIDC) plans to allot 20,000 sq m of a plot in Tarapur MIDC, originally reserved for a playground, to a Kalbadevi-based textile unit.
In 2010, MIDC had allotted 30,000 sq m of the 50,000 sq m plot to D'Decor, a curtain and upholstery manufacturer in Tarapur. With MIDC de-reserving the plot, locals are alleging the state-run corporation is playing into the hands of private players.
The plot is located opposite Boisar railway station, below a flyover to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway.
Residents protesting the MIDC move had rejected an offer for talks by state industries minister Subhash Desai, demanding the allotment be cancelled. Government sources said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled to meet Palghar Guardian Minister Vishnu Savra in this regard.
“We had opposed allotting the plot to the textile unit. A few years ago, the same firm had demanded more land on the same plot for expansion, but locals intervened.Taking note of the public outrage, MIDC did not allot land to D'décor. We thought the remaining 20,000 sq m would be used for a playground,“ resident Manoj Pandit said.
“Now we hear that MIDC has decided to allot the remaining 20,000 sq m to Ramdev Synthetics, a Kalbadevi firm involved in spinning, weaving and finishing of textiles. We deplore MIDC's move to de-reserve playground plots for industrialists,“ said Vivek Wade, chairman, Maidan Bachav Samiti, a committee formed to save the playground from being sold to private players.
“An amicable solution will be reached and a middle path will be adopted so both parties are satisfied.I am in touch with the CM,“ Savra said.
