JAPANESE AGENCY KEEN TO FUND SEWRI-NHAVA SEA LINK :Hindustan Times

MUMBAI: Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) expressed its interest to finance the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) project during a meeting with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday.

In a text message, Fadnavis said: “JICA will be financing the MTHL project. Had a fruitful discussion with them (sic).”

The chief minister also took to Twitter, talking about his meeting with the JICA officials.

The 22-km sea link is planned from Sewri in Mumbai to Nhava in Navi Mumbai. The project will reduce travel time and will help decongest the city.

Earlier, doubts over JICA’s funding were raised after a Chinese construction company had shown in the project.

JICA officials also met the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials on Thursday to discuss the project.

Prakash Mamdapure, engineerin-chief, MMRDA, said “The possible funding and execution work will be discussed in two months.”

The loan agreement with JICA may be signed by the end of the year.

The MMRDA had decided to go ahead with the project on cash-contract basis after the project failed to take off on publicprivate-partnership model in August 2013.

At present, JICA is carrying out social and environment impact assessment studies.
