Broke TMC repairs handful of shaky buildings housing civic schools

Thane: Despite the incidents of wall collapse, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is finding it difficult to maintain its schools due to lack of funds. Around 29 civic school buildings are more than 30 years old.
Though, the civic body has recently began the repair works, it does not have funds to take repair all the dilapidated school buildings. Hence, it is focusing on the most dangerous structures, keeping students safety in mind.
“Almost two months after the schools reopened, TMC is conducting repair works. The civic body has just began with the safety audit of school buildings, which clearly highlights their lackadaisical attitude. There were heavy showers in the last few days and it is too late to take action,” said a teacher from a civic schools requesting anonymity.
Recently, the civic body had demolished four schools, which were touted as extremely dangerous buildings, and shifted around 12,000 students to other TMC buildings.
Despite the lack of funds, it has managed to take action against the buildings that need urgent attention. The other dilapidated buildings will see repair works soon.
Another reason for the slow rehabilitation is that the work of conducting structural audit of civic schools was given to a private organisation since 2012.
