MUMBAI: After the Bombay high court’s directives on potholes, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has started to improve their mechanism — from making changes in the pothole tracking website to the announcement of toll-free numbers to register complaints.
However, much to citizens’ dismay, these numbers are not accessible through mobile phones or non-MTNL numbers.
The BMC first began improvements with the pothole tracking system by making it available on all smartphones, three years after the system was introduced. It then launched two toll-free numbers,
1292 and 1293.
A few days ago, it announced these two numbers could be used on all phones, but users found these numbers worked only on MTNL numbers. The BMC had used these numbers earlier to register complaints about illegal banners in the city. Non-MTNL users can complain on 22691292 or 22691293, for which they will be charged.
A few corporators have come down heavily on the civic body.
Asif Zakaria, Congress corporator, said, “I cannot complaint about a pothole from my mobile phone. Why fool citizens by calling it toll free when they cannot call from wherever they are. Another issue is if the complaints are addressed at all or not.”
Ashok Pawar, chief engineer of roads department, said,
“The numbers are functional. If there are complaints, the problem will be fixed at the earliest.”
