THANE: The construction of Kapurbawdi flyover went on for seven years, but still the last arm has not been thrown open to the public.
This delay is one of the root causes of major traffic congestion on Majiwada junction.
For almost six years, commuters were inconvenienced by the ongoing construction work.
Thane residents have suffered for so long in hope that the Kapurbawdi f l yover will resolve most problems. Although the four bridges of Kapurbawdi flyover have opened over the past few years, problems still persist.
Thane-based activist Chandrahas Tawade s aid: “T he planning of Kapurbawadi flyover is flauty. There was a need for bridge over bridge at the junction. The designing of Ghodbunder- Mumbai flyover has changed many times. At present, the design is complicated and the flyover is accident-prone. Moreover two of the arms, from Mumbai to Old Bhiwandi road and Old Bhiwandi road to Mumbai are rarely used by motorists.”
He added that an efficient signaling system on the junction is the most feasible solution to control traffic.
Residential buildings along Ghodbunder Road have increased over the last decade. But, it is the only road to Thane station or to Mumbai. A parallel road to Ghodbunder will resolve most of the traffic issue at Majiwada, said Tawade.
Rajan Vyavhare, an IT professional and a resident of Rutu Park, had filed a petition on the technical snags in the ongoing flyover work.
“There should be a parallel coastal road along the entire creek which can be used by the heavy vehicles. This will ease congestion at Majwada. Another issue is the number of crossroads ending at the junction. There are so many small lanes from Rutu Park, Lodha, Kolshet and Majiwada village ending at the junction, adding to the chaos. The crossings should be closed by diverting the traffic. A two- or three-tier bridge can also be planned over the junction.”
Vyavhare is against the highway having paver blocks.
“The paver blocks below the bridge at Majiwada junction obstruct smooth flow of traffic. The illegally parked vehicles near Cine Wonder Mall also add to traffic woes.”
