123 families forced to vacate 9 shaky bldgs :The Times of India

Municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal on Thursday forced out as many as 123 families living in nine dangerously dilapidated multi-storey structures in Thane and sealed their premises on Thursday , evoking mixed emotions of anger and confusion among the evacuees.

The action comes two days after the three-storey Krishna Nivas collapsed in Naupada, claiming 12 lives.

While 40-odd families were provided with transit accommodation in the rental housing colony at Vartak Nagar, others were reluctant to accept transit tenement.

Jaiswal is believed to be working on a two-pronged strategy , whereby his immediate concern is to evacuate as many residents as possible from unsafe structures and prevent human tragedy . The longterm plan is to ensure that 30year-old buildings get a stability certificate from structural engineers and to work out a cluster redevelopment policy .

However, a wave of rage and confusion swept over the 57 families in the four-storey Aaji Krupa building in Hari Nivas, when civic officials asked to vacate their dilapidated homes within a few hours.Vanita Kamtekar (65), who has been living in the building for the past 40 years, said, “I live alone and my son is in Aurangabad for work. I asked them to give me two days' time, so that my son could come and help me, but in vain. I don't know where to go as they have not given any details of alternative accommodation.“

Her neighbour Rekha Mistry (50) was confused whether she should start packing or be next to her husband who was discharged from hospital two days ago following treatment for a heart attack.

For the Shettys, this was the second shifting in the span of 24 hours. “I lived with my husband and three children in Yashwant Kunj, which was evacuated on Wednesday . We moved into our relatives' place in Aaji Krupa, and now this building is being evacuated. We were promised a 160-sqft home in the rental housing colony, but it would be insufficient for our large family,“ said Bharti Shetty (46).

There are nearly 2,700 dilapidated buildings in Thane city, of which nearly 50 have been declared dangerous and around 3 lakh residents live in these shaky structures.

`Book Thane mayor, standing panel chief'

Opposition leader in the assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has demanded that FIRs should be registered against the Thane mayor and standing committee chairman for the Naupada building crash and the civic officers concerned suspended. Visiting the site on Thursday, Vikhe Patil alleged local Sena leaders were overlooking the interests of the residents and added that he would urge the CM to look into the issue. Vikhe Patil also met the survivors of the Thakurli building crash and demanded police action against the accused, including the builders. TNN
