BMC to widen, reconstruct two bridges to ease traffic congestion : Hindustan Times (Mumbai)

Project pegged at ` 17 crore; to be completed in two years

MUMBAI: To ease traffic congestion at Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road, the civic body will soon reconstruct and widen the existing two bridges at Children’s aid nullah and PMGP nullah.

Owing to the narrow width of these two bridges, the link road faces traffic jam during peak hours. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to spend Rs17 crore on this project and the work is expected to be completed within two years.
The widening will help more vehicles ply on the stretch which leads to the Eastern Freeway, said civic officials.
“A major part of the Ghatkopar- Mankhurd Link Road is already widened and the traffic movement is smooth on the complete stretch, except these two bridges. This leads to traffic snarls,” said a senior civic official.
“The situation is especially bad during heavy rain as the narrow bridges get waterlogged. The proposal of widening these two bridges was put forth by the fact- finding committee that was formed after the 2005 deluge,” he added.
Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner, M-east (Govandi), said: “The other bridges at Subhash Nagar nullah had been widened already. We are planning a similar reconstruction and widening of Children’s Aid nullah and PMGP nullah.”
The widening of this bridge is also going to help the upcoming Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project. The BEST has proposed dedicated bus lanes on the Ghatkopar-Link Road. The proposal will be tabled in front of the standing committee on Wednesday for a final approval.
However, a few major issues on the stretch are yet to be addressed. The arterial Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road has several encroachments on footpaths and service roads, which authorities have failed to evict in the past many years.
Potholes, too, appear in huge numbers on this road, severely affecting traffic movement leading to congestion.
