Civic body approves subway plan on Palm Beach Road : Hindustan Times

CBD BELAPUR: After 17 deaths, the dangerous Palm Beach road near Karave village will get a subway.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has finally approved a resolution to build the subway, meeting the villagers’ long-pending demand.

Last week, the villagers had intensified their protest by blocking the road.

Palm Beach Road has a history of accidents. The fisherfolk of the villages along it have to cross the road to get to the creek when they go for fishing. Several of them have met with accidents due to the speeding vehicles. There have been deaths too with villagers claiming 15 lives have been lost in recent times.

Around 40% villagers are fisherfolk and have to cross the road to reach the creek. They risk their lives every morning to cross the road.

When repeated demands for a subway elicited l ittle response from the administration, the villagers supported by politicians cutting across party lines staged a rasta roko on Palm Beach Road on July 14 and then marched to NMMC headquarters.

The NMMC administration had taking note of the villagers’ resolve assured that immediate action will be taken and a resolution to the effect will be presented in the next general body meeting.

The general body meeting on Monday approved Rs 3 crore for the project which has pleased the villagers.

According to local corporator Vinod Mhatre, “This was a long pending demand of the villagers. We thank the administration for taking immediate action following our protest.”

Local corporator Ganesh Mhatre, said, “Several fisherfolk have lost their lives while crossing the road due to lack of a subway. The NMMC should compensate such families.”

NEED A SAFE CROSSING

Palm Beach Road has a history of accidents. In two separate accidents recently, a woman and a man lost their lives. A few days later, over 500 villagers staged a rally and blocked the road. The villagers have long been demanding a subway on the road. The NMMC and Cidco officials have held several inspections of the site but had delayed taking a decision. Around 40% villagers are fisherfolk and have to cross the road to reach the creek. They risk their lives every morning to cross the road. The villagers demanded that the NMMC’s emergency department pay compensation to the families of the 15 villagers who have lost their lives. The local corporator has been backing the villagers in their demands.
