The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has demanded Rs 78 crore from the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) to repair and reconstruct parts of the Andheri-Versova Link Road and J P Road, the Chief Minister said in a written reply at the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. The MMRDA has been under fire for the poorly-maintained roads along the Versova-Ghatkopar-Andheri Metro stretch for a long time.
Additional Municipal Commissioner SVR Srinivas, in-charge of the roads department, said, “The roads were damaged due to Metro work and various other reasons. The planning authority had taken the roads from BMC almost a decade ago. We have undertaken it again and prepared an estimate for the repair works.” He also confirmed that BMC held a meeting with MMRDA commissioner in this regard and have also sent a reminder for the same.
The 5.6-km-long Link Road is an arterial east-west connector from Andheri station to Ghatkopar. The JP Road falls between Versova and SV Road junction, which was shut during the construction of the Metro corridor. The two roads are a part of 38.6-km-long road network that was with the MMRDA for maintenance. Motorists have long been complaining of the uneven paver-blocks or interlocking tiles on the link road that runs below the corridor.
According to the reply given in the Assembly, the roads were handed over back to BMC in March this year. A recent state-appointed committee had recommended that all roads in the city be brought under the purview of BMC to maintain accountability for repairs and reconstruction. Dilip Kawathkar, MMRDA’s Joint Project Director (public relations), said, “The work for the payment is in process.”
