MUMBAI: To curb the spread of monsoon-related ailments, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued stop-work notices to 32 real estate projects in the city, after finding mosquito-breeding spots at the construction sites.
“We issued stop-work notices to under-construction projects at Worli and Prabhadevi last week. There were mosquito-breeding sites in the water storage tanks and other unused articles lying at the construction sites. In some cases, the workers were not provided with mosquito nets. This could prove to be dangerous for workers as well as those living in the vicinity,” said a source.
Sources claimed an ongoing construction project of a well-known realty group at Bhoiwada, too, has been handed over a stop- work notice. “We have issued notices under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 354 (A), which gives the civic body the power to stop work on a building. The notices will be revoked only after they comply with the rules and inform us. We will inspect the spots again, after which the project will get a nod,” said a source.
Learning from outbreaks of dengue and malaria in the past, the civic body has started taking precautionary steps such as issuing advisory to housing societies and construction sites.
“After sending notices to developers, some of t hem approached the BMC with the compliance report. We will inspect the sites again and then revoke the stop-work notice,” said an officer from the insecticide department.
Meanwhile, at the onset of the monsoon, officials from the BMC’s insecticide department had issued a 10-point advisory to 2,741 construction sites.
