MUMBAI: A year after the Maharashtra government raised questions over the Shiv-Sena led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) claim that it owned 30% of the Mahalaxmi race course land, the civic body is yet to prove its claim.
The issue, discussed in the BJP-led improvements committee on Friday, was referred back and members have demanded clear information on the civic body’s development to prove ownership.
The Urban Development (UD) department had asked the BMC to provide property records for the plot over the past 100 years as documentary evidence to prove ownership.
The Sena has planned to convert the race course land into a theme park and had also included it in its Assembly election agenda. However, lack of evidence has further delayed their plan.
The senior civic of f i cial informed that they have asked for details from the Collector’s office and have already sent two reminders but are yet to receive the details. The Mahalaxmi race course is spread over 8.55 lakh sqm of open space. Of this, the BMC has claimed ownership of 2.58 lakh sqm while conceding that the remaining 5.97 lakh sqm space is owned by the state government.
