BMC has drastically increased the fine from last year for contractors who fail the pothole quality filling test.
The civic body , who recently fined five out of seven defaulting contractors, has announced an increase in the fine from Rs 20,000 last year to Rs 5 lakh this year. Senior civic officials said the move is aimed at increasing pressure on the contractors to take precautions while doing repair work in future.
The BMC conducted a random inspection a fortnight ago for material used by contractors in filling potholes which came up after the heavy downpour on June 19.
“We took advantage of the dry spell and checked the quality of material. The Marshall stability and bitumen level was less than the requirement; therefore we decided to fine the contractors. The fine rate is steep as we want it to be a deterrent for them,“ said Srinivas, the BMC additional municipal commissioner in charge of roads.
