MUMBAI: The resurfacing work on a road overbridge (ROB) near Jogeshwari station, which has been under construction for the past six years and has missed its inauguration scheduled in June, may now be carried out during the monsoon, so it can be thrown open to public by the end of September.
Generally, road works are brought to a complete halt during the rains. The deadline for the overbridge in Jogeshwari south, aimed at a smoother east-west commute and seen as a solution to the traffic congestion on SV Road, has been extended twice. Once ready, the bridge will also make reaching the Western Express Highway easier.
SVR Srinivas, additional municipal commissioner, said, “The work on the bridges is under process and will be completed soon. We are aiming to inaugurate it by September.”
“The authorities want to complete the work by September. We are worried about completing the work during the monsoon. The main reason behind the delay is encroachment. We have spent over Rs200 crore on this project and have given various deadline extensions to the contractor,” said a senior civic official, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorized to speak to the media.
The inauguration plan was announced in the budget speech by ex- civic chief Sitaram Kunte. While t he deadline for the Jogeshwari south bridge was June 2015, Jogeshwari north was to be ready by December.
