BKC-Chunabhatti link road yet to take off : Hindustan Times

MUMBAI:

The construction of the BKC- Chunabhatti elevated road has been delayed by a few months, thanks to delay in getting permissions and the monsoon season.

Once the link road is constructed, commuters from the eastern suburbs, Thane and Navi Mumbai will be able to skip the highly congested Sion- Dharavi Link road to reach BKC. Also, the travel time from Sion to the BKC will be reduced to just five minutes from current 20 to 45 minutes during peak hours.

According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials, the construction work was supposed to start in May this year, but will start only after monsoon is over.

“As the work order was not issued until recently, the contractor could not start the work. Now, the order has been issued but the construction cannot begin because of the monsoon,” said an MMRDA official.

The MMRDA could have started the construction of the 1.6-km road in October last year, as it had appointed the contractor, J Kumar, in July 2014.

However, pending clearances from the Central Railway and the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) – the road passes over the central railway line and the Mithi river – caused MMRDA to wait till this year.

When chief minister Devendra Fadnavis laid the foundation stone for the elevated road on April 19, MMRDA had said the construction work would start in a week’s time. However, some technical and administrative issues delayed the work order.

MMRDA officials said activities such as girder casting work may be started during the monsoon, to make up for lost time.

The elevated link road will start from the G-Block of BKC, then cross Mithi River and two railway lines before descending on the Eastern Express Highway near Somaiya football ground.
