Plan to build promenades, water sports in Thane creek gets a push:Hindustan Times

The move will ensure protection and conservation of waterfront from land sharks

THANE: You will soon be able to participate in water sports in the Thane creek.
With the revival of the waterfront development project, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will implement recreational and conservation activities in the first of the three phases from Thane railway station to Kalwa Creek. Water transport will be started in later phases.
The civic commissioner had conducted a meeting on the project on Wednesday.
Sandeep Malvi, public relations officer of TMC, said, “We will build promenades and centres for people to hang out at. Our focus will be to start amusement and recreational activities such as water sports along the waterfront.”
This will also ensure protection and conservation of the waterfront from land sharks. The corporation has formed a special cell to work on this project and the expression of interest will be submitted before November 10. The second and third phase will be worked out after the planning of the first phase.
“The first phase will be developed as a revenue model wherein the corporation can earn some revenue from the project. The second phase will be developed on public-private participation so that we won’t have to shell out money, while the third phase will be developed with viability gap funding wherein there will be capital sharing by sponsors and corporation,” said Malvi.
The important aspect of waterfront development is facilitating transport between Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. In February, Union minister of transport Nitin Gadkari announced the approval of water transport.
TMC had appointed NeyPoullissen Engineers and Architects, a Belgium-based consultancy firm to carry out study for the waterfront project. A proposal based on this study was prepared by the corporation and the consultants. It is a Rs20,000-crore project and will be implemented phase-wise.
