10-yr lock-in for sale of SRA flats to stay : DNA

Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta has turned down the state proposal seeking relaxation of the 10-year lock-in period for sale and purchase of flats allotted under Slum Rehabilitation Scheme. The beneficiaries cannot sell their flats during the period.

Ravindra Waikar, minister of state for housing, higher & technical education, had put up a proposal to the chief minister regarding the same. The chief minister’s office had sought a reply from the BMC.

In his written opinion, which will be tabled in the corporation’s general body meeting this month, Mehta has said the scheme is meant for the benefit of slum dwellers and the beneficiaries get redeveloped flats with all the modern amenities and attached toilets. Also, that the scheme is implemented to reduce slum pockets in the city. Hence, if relaxation is given, it will defy the whole purpose of the scheme.

The opinion given by the commissioner states: “With an endeavour to improve the life of slum dwellers, housing scheme under Slum Rehabilitation Authority is implemented. If the Act is amended and rules are modified and slum dwellers are allowed to sell or purchase the redeveloped units before 10 years, then the whole purpose of SRA scheme will be defied.”
