Help build loos in Mankhurd & Govandi, BMC tells corporates : Times of India

MUMBAI:The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and M-east ward held a workshop on 'Total Sanitation' at the TISS campus on Friday to explain the need to create basic infrastructure facilities, like toilets, for the poor. The BMC sought the co-operation of corporate entities through the latter's corporate social responsibility (CSR) management initiatives for the construction of 54 toilets in M-East ward, which covers Deonar, Mankhurd, Anushakti Nagar and Govandi.

Spurred into action after the incident in Maharashtra Nagar where a woman lost her life after falling into a septic tank, the BMC identified 54 such dilapidated toilet blocks across the ward, shutting them down for being unusable. TISS presented a study on Mankhurd, where, of the five areas studied—Jyotirling Nagar, Mandala, Transit Camp A and B, Maharashtra Nagar, six slum pockets did not have a single public or individual toilet—critical to attain the goals of zero open defecation and total sanitation. Going by the Swachh Bharat Mission norm of one toilet for 35 men and one toilet for 25 women, the ward is lacking 14,704 toilets.

Kiran Dighavkar, the ward's assistant commissioner said, "The Maharashtra Nagar accident of March 2015 came as an eye-opener for us. We urge CSR to engage and participate in the transformation mission."
