ED attaches tainted developer’s assets worth R 17.35 crore : Hindustan Times

MUMBAI: T he enforcement directorate (ED) has attached fixed deposits and properties worth Rs17.35 crore belonging to KS Chamankar, the owner of the firm that was appointed the developer of Maharashtra Sadan.

“We have attached f i xed deposits of Rs5 crore and property, including four flats in the western suburbs, and a farmhouse,” said a senior ED officer.

ED sources said this is the first step and there could be more attachments. “Investigations have revealed that these investments and properties were obtained with the gains from the contract,” said the officer.

The Chamankar family and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal have been questioned in connection with the case. The ED earlier conducted searches at different premises owned by the family across the city.

KS Chamankar’s firm was allegedly appointed for revamping the Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi and the Andheri RTO in lieu of FSI for a slum rehabilitation project in Andheri.

The anti-corruption bureau (ACB), which is also conducting a probe in the case, has booked Chamankar, Pravina Chamankar, Pranita Chamankar and Prasanna Chamankar. The FIR said the move benefited the developer, but the state suffered losses.

The ACB is looking at the allegations of corruption and misuse of power, while the ED is looking at the financial dealings.

ACB sources said that they are in the final stages of filling a charge sheet against the Bhujbals and others. “We will file the charge sheet this month,” said a high-ranking officer.

In December 2014, the high court gave the ACB its go-ahead to conduct an inquiry against Bhujbal, following which a special investigation team was set up that worked in co-ordination with the ED.
