`Nearly 1,000 flats used for biz purposes': Hindustan Times

Guidelines Flouted In Mumbadevi, Zaveri Bazaar

A recent civic inspection report on buildings in C Ward has indicated that 970 residential spaces in Kalbadevi, Zaveri Bazaar and Mumbadevi have been converted into commercial units without proper permission.

The BMC has served n otices to 200 such units and nearly 600 have been slapped prosecution notices “for not having requisite licences for operating business“. After the Kalbadevi blaze on May 9, the civic administration is cracking the whip. In May , the BMC started inspecting buildings in the C ward.

The ward has 5,800 buildings and more than 600 buildings have been scrutinized till now.

A team from the solid waste management (SWM), licence and maintenance department examine the buildings. Besides conversion of units from residential to commercial, there were other irregularities for which the owners have been served notices.

The solid waste management department also collected a fine of 3.45 lakh from 624 units for garbage found on their premises.

The owners, who have converted their premises from residential to commercial, were served notices under Section 347 of the BMC Act, which states that no alteration can be made to a residential building. A report of the buildings, which have been inspected, was submitted to additional municipal commissioner (city) Pallavi Darade. “After the fire at Kal badevi, it was decided to undertake this inspection By checking each unit in the ward we plan to make this is an example for the cityWe are hoping that peo ple take cognizance and fol ow the norms laid down,“ said Darade.

Fire brigade inspects mall on Linking Road

The fire brigade on Tuesday inspected Kenilworth Mall on Linking Road in Bandra and said it had not adopted fire safety measures. Officials said the mall's power supply was restored without informing the fire brigade. The mall caught fire in July after which the fire brigade had filed a case.
