Less than two months of water is left in reservoirs, BMC says don't panic: The Times of India

Mumbai: The seven lakes supplying water to the city have just 60 days of stock left. Since the onset of the monsoon has been delayed in Kerala, and is likely to miss its normal onset date of June 10 in Mumbai, the water stock of the lakes is expected to reduce in the days ahead. But the BMC says there is no need to panic since water stock on June 4 last year was less than this time around.

Deputy municipal commissioner (special engineering) Ramesh Bambale said there are no plans for water cuts if rains hit the city by mid-June. Last July , the BMC imposed a 20% water cut as then lakes had only 30 days of water left. The water cut for star hotels, malls and industrial units was 50%.

Civic activists say the water stock would have been much more had the civic administration taken adequate precautions to prevent leakage and theft. Kalina-based civic activist Crompton Texeria said, "I detected several leakages in the last five months. These were verified by junior engineers of the H-east ward but not attended on priority ."

Meanwhile, BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta and DRM Amitabh Ojha, CR, Mumbai division, have inspected nullah safai works between CST and Mulund. The two plan to hold a meeting next week to think of a permanent solution to deal with garbage from slums along railway stations.
