MUMBAI: The ambitious coastal road project may be extended beyond the proposed stretch of Nariman Point to Kandivli.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put up for public review states t hat connectivity to Madh, Gorai and Dahisar will also be part of the project. The plan of extending the coastal road will be made after the completion of initial plan.
“During the construction of Nariman Point- Kandivli stretch, we will have one arm that leads to Madh that also gives way to Gorai. However, at a later stage, connectivity Kandivli to Dahisar will be taken into consideration. Any further extension will be part of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR),” said an officer from the road department. Recently, the civic body has uploaded a DPR of the Nariman Point to Kandivli coastal road plan on their website for their suggestions and objection. Till now, the department has received five suggestions on the plan.
The 33.2-km proposed stretch has 11 interchanges at various locations. The Rs11,299 crore road will pass through tunnels and elevated stretches. To protect road from sea storms, the civic body has proposed the construction of a sea wall. Also, BMC will undertake reclamation for the project after a long time. The reclamation will give the city around 91 hectares of green space. Previously, the civic body had undertaken reclamation of the backbay and Bandra-Kurla Complex area. “The further extension of coastal road to Madh and Gorai will definitely provide better connectivity for these areas since these parts don’t have any direct road from the city. This will help residents, since they can only travel by boat. However, the proposal is in a very nascent stage,” said another civic official. Currently, the only connectivity to Madh and Gorai i s boat services from Borivli or by road from Bhayander.
