Residents of dilapidated buildings keep BMC on tenterhooks as rain continues : The Times of India

Mumbai: Rain continued to lash the city , though with less intensity , on Sunday as two persons died and five were injured in two incidents on Saturday night. The rainfall recorded from 8.30am to 8.30pm on Sunday was 32.4mm in Colaba and 48.7mm in Santa Cruz.
But there was not much improvement in rainfall in catchment areas.

The fire brigade received 61 calls, out of which 12 were related to fire, 37 to tree crashes, eight to rescue operations and four to wallhouse collapses.The biggest worry for the civic authorities was the safety of dilapidated buildings' residents, who were requested to shift to safer places.

The water level in the Mithi river was far below its danger mark of 2.7 metres.

Road traffic was normal, though there were some diversions or brief stoppages due to tree crashes.

Four hutments were affected by a landslide at Panjrapole in Chembur (E) but no one was injured. The BMC, with the help of police, had forcibly shifted the encroachers to a civic school before the incident.Jagruti Gandhi (55) sustained injuries after a slab collapsed on her in Vile Parle (W). Civic officials said there were court orders not to forcibly evacuate residents of dilapidated buildings. The BMC has been repeatedly sending notices to the residents to vacate. Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta also requested them to cooperate.

Despite no mega block, Central Railway main line services were delayed, mainly due to rain. Some commuters complained that fast trains were late by at least 20 minutes. CR, however, did not stopcancel any suburban service. Harbour line passengers said trains on the Panvel-CST corridor ran on time. Western Railway trains ran on schedule and had cancelled its jumbo block between Dadar and Mumbai Central. “We are taking utmost precautions to minimize passenger inconvenience,“ said chief spokesperson Sharat Chandrayan.
