The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) ambitious 14km Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) has hit a hurdle over land acquisition, which may force it to change the alignment of the crucial link. Also, the length of the GMLR may be reduced.
This could further result in cost escalation and the project getting delayed beyond the three- year deadline.
The BMC had proposed that t he Rs1,300 crore elevated GMLR start from the entrance of the Aarey Milk Colony at the Western Express Highway and end at the LBS Marg in Mulund.
However, this stretch runs through sensitive and high security areas such as t he Bhandup water complex, Naval Dockyard establishments in Bhandup and the IIT-Bombay premises.
The biggest hurdle is BMC’s Bhandup water complex that has a water filtration and treatment plant.
“The Bhandup complex is the source for the city’s water supply. No development is allowed near the treatment plant,” said a source form the civic body said,
Also, getting per mission from Aarey Colony, defence areas and IIT-Bombay will be a major challenge, he said.
Civic officials are now exploring the possibilities of another route for the project and officials have started conducting fresh survey of the disputed parts.
Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, additional municipal commissioner, projects, told HT, “There are a few issues, but we will try to sort them out soon. Our team is exploring all the options and we will meet all agencies. We will then come up with the exact alignment of the project.”
Initially, it was proposed to have a four-lane road from Aarey t o Saki Vihar Road and then an elevated stretch t o Mulund. However, after environmentalists protested about the threat to Aarey ecology and wildlife, the civic body proposed the elevated four-lane stretch passing through Aarey Colony, Saki Vihar, Bhandup Complex ending at LBS Marg in Mulund.
