Three weeks after a portion of the Kalyan (West) skywalk collapsed, another part fell down on Monday, injuring a pedestrian.
Santosh Evle, 55, a resident of Kalyan, was walking by near the Kalyan railway station when a portion of the skywalk fell on him, hurting his leg.
Another pedestrian, Sayyed Pasha, helped Evle and took him to the Kalyan Rukminibai civic hospital. “I was walking to the railway station and all of sudden, a huge sheet collapsed and fell over my right leg. I fell down because of the impact of the crash,” said Evle.
The Kalyan resident claimed his troubles did not end there, as the Rukminibai hospital allegedly refused to treat him after giving him basic first aid, claiming they did not have staff to operate the X-ray machine.
Evle claimed he had to shift to a private hospital with the help of some locals. The hospital has denied refusing him treatment.
“We did not refuse to treat him. We gave him primary treatment and ensured he was out of any danger. Our X-ray department works only till 4pm because of staff shortage and he arrived around 4.30pm,” said Ashwini Patil, dean, Rukminibai hospital.
This is the second time the skywalk has collapsed in a month, after a similar incident on June
Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) officials had then claimed the fibre sheets attached to the bottom of the skywalk had come loose because thieves and pickpockets dumped the stolen wallets there, weighing down the sheets.
“Such incidents take place because the skywalk is misused. After the first collapse, we had removed the loose sheets. However, I will visit the spot again and do the needful,” said Pramod Kulkarni, executive engineer, KDMC.
