MUMBAI:
After living in fear f or t wo days, residents of Madhusudan Kawali Chawl at Dadar finally heaved a sigh of relief on Tuesday morning.
The wires outside the Madhusudan Kawali Chawl, Dadar.
For, after several complaints of minor electric shocks being felt in their walls, the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) finally removed the faulty wiring hanging dangerously over their metal sheet roofs.
The wires were connected from the chawl’s electric board through a common connection to provide electricity to an under-construction building in the vicinity, claimed residents. The 100-plus-year-old chawl has 150 people residing in 32 houses.
“We had objected to the connections when they were being fixed on Saturday, but BEST didn’t pay heed. We could feel electric shocks. We then submitted an objection letter,” said Prakash Patil, a resident of the chawl.
The continuous rainfall since Thursday night, however, left the residents worried. After their repeated complaints, the BEST officials removed the wires on Tuesday. “Finally, we are relieved,” said Swapnil Mhatre, another resident.
A BEST official from the customer care department, who had come to remove the faulty wiring, said, “We cannot continue to use their electric board to provide electricity if the society raises objections. We will find an alternative.”
A BEST spokesperson refused to comment on the issue.
