TO COUNTER CHARGES Cong conclave passes a resolution rejecting the proposed amendments
o counter Prime inister Narendra Modi's claim that e demand for amending the land ac uisition act came also from pposition-ruled states, the Congress nclave passed a resolution rejecting e proposed amendments. “The meet g of chief ministers of Congress led states chaired by the Congress esident rejects the proposed amend ents to the Right to Fair ompensation and Transparency in and Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, and also the recommended dilutions in the National Food Security Act, 2013.“
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh told reporters, “the Congress chief ministers have unanimously said that they reject the amendments.“
Though the central Congress has been vociferously rejecting the amendments, BJP and the government have insisted that the amendments were necessitated only after a demand from states. In a recent interview Modi had said, “after the NDA came to power, we realised there were certain points in the law that would have made the farmers' situation worse if we did not bring in the ordinance. Also, chief ministers of several states ruled by various parties came to demand changes in the law, including Kerala. We could not have made it a point of ego to say that we won't change the law just because we supported it in 2013. Our intention is to amend only those provisions in the 2013 act that militate against the process of growth and are against the interest of farmers.“
