Mumbai: Two Injured In Landslide In Andheri
Heavy showers were witnessed while the city slept on Thursday night. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Mumbai, announced the arrival of the monsoon on Friday, adding that the onset had been with a `big bang'. There was a downpour early on Friday morning too in several parts, including Khar, Jogeshwari and Kandivli in the western suburbs and Thane, Mulund and Ghatkopar in the eastern suburbs.
Thirty-six tree fall complaints were registered by the civic disaster management, while two persons were injured in a landslide at Andheri's Gilbert Hill at 11.32am.
In the 24-hour period on June 11-12, the rainfall recorded in Santa Cruz was 82.2mm and in Colaba 24.4mm. Social media like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter were abuzz with people posting photographs of the first rains with hashtags like #monsoon and #Mumbairains trending.
K S Hosalikar, deputy director-general, RMC, said, “The normal date for the monsoon's onset is June 10, so it is two days late. Generally, the southwest monsoon is known to set in with a drizzle. But the arrival has been very good this year, with there being a significant amount of rain recorded in Santa Cruz and Colaba. In fact, the amount of rain in Santa Cruz (82.2mm) comes under the `heavy rainfall' category.“
Weather officials said conditions were favorable for good rainfall. The monsoon set into Ratnagiri on June 8 but it was stalled there for two days. Officials said it could have been due to Cyclone Ashobaa.
“Ashobaa was almost 600km away from the coast and was moving in the north-westerly direction, so it did not affect the setting in of the southwest monsoon much, except that the monsoon stayed in Ratnagiri for longer than expected,“ said Hosalikar.
Last year too, the southwest monsoon did not pick up pace on account of the cyclonic storm Nanauk, which was over the Arabian Sea around June 12. IMD officials claimed that such weather systems are known to take away moisture and tend to have a negative impact on the arrival of the monsoon.
The maximum temperature recorded in Colaba was 31 degrees Celsius, which is 1.5 degrees below normal, while in Santa Cruz it was 31.3 degrees Celsius, which was 1.3 degree below normal, on Friday. The rainfall recorded in Colaba between 8.30am5.30pm on Friday was 0.2mm, while it was 3.6mm in Santa Cruz.
The forecast for the next 24 hours is rain or thunder showers, with one or two heavy spells.
Two vehicles were also damaged in the landslide at Gilbert Hill, police said.“Rainfall resulted in some rocks coming off. Some fell on the hood of an autorick shaw, injuring the driver, Avanish Singh (29). Singh, who lives at Hindustan Naka, Kandivli, suffered head injuries,“ an official said.
Some rocks also hit an Activa and injured its owner, Sajid Sayyad (36). The businessman sustained injuries on his shoulder, chin and chest. Sayyad and Singh were taken to Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle for treatment. Civic officials and the fire brigade went to the spot, besides the DN Nagar police.
Part of a road caved in at Matunga, leading to a truck being stuck for several hours, on Friday morning.
