Suggestions For Five SoBo Wards Heard, Report On C-Ward Soon
The Mumbai Heritage Review Committee has completed hearing most suggestions and objections received from the five wards in the island city and will submit its report on one ward by June 15.
While the hearings were held for wards A to E, the committee will initially submit the report for D-ward to BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta, who will then forward it to the state government. The D ward report will be extremely significant as the area has 120 heritage sites, structures and precincts like Gamdevi, Khotachiwadi, Mahalaxmi temple and Opera House.

From the first week of April, the committee began hearings of the suggestionsobjections which it has received for the proposed heritage list of 2012, regarding structures for wards A, B, C, D and E A member on the review panel said, “It has been a cumbersome task as these city wards have a rich heritage. While preservation of that heritage is what we are aiming towards, but we do not want to retain the structure forcefully if it is in shambles.“

These five wards in the city are known to consist of impressive Art Déco buildings and landmark structures of great historical significance as well.

While A ward includes areas like Jamshetji Tata road, Madame Cama Road, Cooperage Road, Veer Nariman Road, B ward includes Babulnath tank, Mazgaon Road, Dongri and Abdul Rehman Street, Cward covers Princess Street, Marine Drive, Dr Cawasji Hormusji Lane, D ward includes Khetwadi, Walkeshwar, Bhulabhai Desai Road and E ward has Sane Guruji Marg, Clare Road, Dr Mascarenhas Road.

The committee's chairman, Dinesh Afzalpurkar, said the D ward report is being prepared and is likely to be submitted by June 15. “We will give our report to the municipal commissioner as we have completed hearings and most site inspections for this ward,“ said Afzalpurkar, who added C ward will be next. Reports of each ward will be submitted individually . Members on the review panel said they are visiting each site to avoid any errors in the report. “We have been going to each site as we want to compare the structure with the data sheet we have. Besides, there are many members on the review panel who have old pictures of the heritage structures, which help verify the condition of the same,“ said a member.

Headed by retired IAS officer Afzalpurkar, the committee was set up in 2013 to take a fresh look at the heritage list of 2012. In April, the committee sent out its report of four wards, FNorth, F-South, G-North and G-South to the then municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte for his consideration. The commissioner is known to have added his comments and forwarded the report to the urban development department.
