Smart City plan creates ruckus in BMC general body meeting

The Smart City proposal sparked a ruckus in BMC’s general body meeting on Monday, when BJP leader in the BMC Manoj Kotak allegedly used objectionable words for opposition members. While the discussion went on for three hours, opposition stalled the proceedings until Kotak withdrew his words.
The civic administration tabled the proposal regarding BMC’s participation in the smart city project. While BJP and Shiv Sena members lauded the proposal, opposition members ridiculed the saffron parties, saying that when the BMC can’t even give basic facilities in the existing system, how will it live up to the expectations of the city.
Kotak then retorted that the corporators get Rs5 crore-7 crore each year to improve the quality of civic services in their areas. “But if they don’t spend for people’s welfare and pocket this fund, they can’t complain about the situation,” he added.
However, while speaking on the floor of the House, Kotak allegedly used objectionable words for opposition members, which irked them. Infuriated members rushed near the mayor chair and created ruckus. They stalled the proceedings and demanded that until Kotak apologised they would not allow them to resume.
Mayor Snehal Ambekar asked Kotak to apologise to the members, but he said he will withdraw his words. She then asked the municipal secretary to expunge the words from the official minutes.
