1,800 illegal buildings face MIDC heat, get notices:Hindustan Times

After Cidco and civic body’s action, MIDC to start demolishing encroachments

CBD BELAPUR: After Cidco and NMMC, MIDC has cracked its whip against illegal constructions and encroachments. The nodal agency has sent sending 1,800 notices to illegal structures across the city, of which 86 are in Digha alone.

Avinash Mali, deputy engineer, MIDC, said: “As per the high court order, notices have been issued to 1,800 encroachments. Action will be taken against them as per the law.”
In the light of the menace of illegal construction continuing unabated in the city, the high court ordered action against them. However, as the city has three nodal agencies, there has been confusion over who will take action leading to several delays.
Last month, following a petition in the high court against illegal structures in Digha area, the court cleared the confusion and asked all the agencies to take action in areas under their jurisdiction. In case of dispute of jurisdiction, the court asked the NMMC to take action as the planning authority of the area.
While Cidco has published a list of 219 illegal structures and started demolishing them, the NMMC has also taken action.
Cidco began its demolition action last week and has sent notices to 219 structures. Those who have not responded to the notice have started facing the music since August 12.
“We are taking extreme care while finalising the list of 2,513 structures. Any demolition action is undertaken only after every aspect is checked and analysed,” said Yogesh Mhase, chief controller, controller of unauthorised constructions, Cidco.
NMMC has started filing criminal cases with the police against those indulging in such activities. It is also publishing their names in the media and on its website. So far, seven cases have been filed.
Subhash Ingle, deputy municipal commissioner (encroachment), NMMC, said: “Instructions have been issued to all officials that no illegal construction should be allowed in the city at any cost.”
As per the MRTP Act, those issued notices by the MIDC have been given a period of one month to respond. Thereafter, the body will take action against them.
