MUMBAI: After a meeting with civic chief Ajoy Mehta on Monday, the civic engineers’ union called off its plan to go on strike from Tuesday.
The strike was announced to protest against Ranjit Dhakne, deputy municipal commissioner of zone 8, who allegedly slapped a junior overseer of Borivli ward office (R/south). The union wants Dhakne to be suspended. Although the strike has been called off, an agitation will be held outside Dhakne’s office on Tuesday.
Union leaders said Mehta assured them that stringent action would be taken against Dhakne. Additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh has submitted an inquiry report on the issue.
“If no action is taken against him, we will not obey his orders. We have decided to boycott him,” said Sainath Rajyadhyaksha, member of joint action committee, which has a few engineers’ union as its members.
Sukhdeo Kashid, secretary, BMC engineers’ union, said, “We called off the strike because the municipal commissioner promised swift action. He assured us he will be fair while deciding on the action to be taken against him. He asked us to give him two days.”
The inquiry report has details of what transpired between the deputy commissioner and the junior overseer, witnesses and their versions, based on which the civic chief will decide the action that needs to be taken.
