Kurla to get state-of-the-art depot with podium parking :The Times of India

Kurla will soon get a state-of-the-art bus depot, with, for the first time, podium parking to accommodate 90 buses, besides 12 pits for high-level maintenance, four diesel-filling stations, modern restrooms and other facil ties for BEST drivers and conductors.
The depot will have a twostorey administrative build ng, engineering and maintenance departments and staff quarters. “Bus maintenance will be of the highest standard and it will be a model depot for others in the country o follow,“ an official said.BEST has 26 depots in the city .

The Kurla depot, spread over 30,820 sq metres, will have a significant portion let out for commercial use. “The highlight of the depot is mul i-level vehicle parking, which is the need of the hour,“ he official said. “The basement will be used for parking private cars, while 50 red buses can be parked on the ground floor. The podium will have 90 buses parked overnight,“ he said.

The depot is strategically ocated close to the BandraKurla Complex and not far rom the railway station.

It is along the busy LBS Marg, and will operate 25 routes, which will ferry passengers as far as Mulund and Nerul, and also to areas such as Santacruz, Andheri East and West, Vidyavihar and Ghatkopar.

Bus maintenance will be accorded priority at the de pot, with 12 user-friendly pits, with proper ventilation.There is an advanced jet spray wash system for buses to ensure they are spic-and-span when leaving the depot in the morning.

“Drivers and conductors play a key role in running buses. The new depot has adequate facilities, such as proper restrooms, changing rooms, lockers, canteen with quality meals and refreshments, and hygienic toilets for staff,“ he said.

The depot's four pumps for dispensing high-speed diesel have automatic indicators to show whether the fuel tank of a bus is full. BEST operates 1,500-1,800 buses on diesel.

The administrative building is a three-storey structure with spacious offices for staff, besides departments for counting cashcoins and facilities like a canteen and restrooms. The engineering section will be housed in a separate one-storey building. The depot also has a rainwater harvesting system and watersewage treatment plants, as part of conservation measures undertaken by BEST.
