BMC staffer caught accepting Rs5-lakh bribe from builder :Hindustan Times

MUMBAI: A sub-engineer from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was arrested at Matunga gymkhana on Wednesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs5 lakh from a builder. The ACB is also probing if the seniors in the department are involved.
According to the ACB, the accused, Pravin Gangadhar Salgaonkar, 49, is with the estates department of the civic body. “The complainant in the case is redeveloping a property in Dadar. The building which is being redeveloped has been razed but the estates department was not giving the no-objection certificate (NOC) required for commencement of work,” said an ACB officer.
The ACB said that Salgaonkar was delaying the NOC following which the complainant approached the Bombay high court (HC). Subsequently, the HC directed the estates department to issue the NOC within 21 days in February. Despite the court order, the NOC was not granted. “When the complainant approached Salgaonkar, he demanded a bribe of Rs17 lakh and agreed to accept Rs5 lakh as the first installment on Wednesday,” said the officer. The complainant then approached the ACB.
