Builders get guidelines to help curb monsoon diseases : The Times of India

Mumbai

The BMC has issued an advisory in a bid to prevent the rise in monsoon-related diseases in the city. Claiming that several diseases like leptospirosis, dengue and malaria can also spread on account of stagnant water at construction sites, the civic body has come up with the guidelines as constructions are a prominent feature in Mumbai.

At present, there are 2,741 buildings all over Mumbai which are under construction. The largest number of under-construction buildings, i.e.225 is in Pnorth ward which includes areas like Malad and Malwani while the least number is in B ward--around 17--which include areas like Dongri and Sandhurst Road.

The BMC has asked builders not to let water stagnate at construction sites. Also, they should keep a check on other small things used in construction like helmets, which remain unused for a long time and where water gets collected. In case of water being collected at spots like tarpaulin and plastic, it should immediately be cleaned.Otherwise, such spots could be mosquito breeding hotbeds.

The BMC has also asked builders to maintain cleanliness in spaces where construction workers live (labour camp) till the time the project is on.Also, mosquito nets should be provided to workers and health cards issued to them.

The civic body will issue stop-work notice to under-construction sites where these orders are not being followed, said an official.
