A businessman from Kharghar, who had “decided to commit suicide“, chickened out when he found death staring him in the face.
It was late on Wednesday evening that the builder, who has been facing a financial crisis, ambled into a bar at CBD Belapur to have the “last drink of his life“ where he drank to his heart's content, said the police.
The businessman later staggered into his car, a Honda City , and drove towards Sarsole creek where he planned to jump into the waters. As he was driving down the isolated and dimly lit path near Palm Beach road, his car accidentally veered off the road, and was stranded in the middle of a slush-filled patch there.
“Much as he tried, the car refused to move ahead. Sloshed and panic-stricken, the builder stayed put in the vehicle for a while, which helped.Good sense prevailed and he then decided to call up a friend to get him out of the sticky situation,“ said a police officer.
On Thursday morning, a passer-by , who was on his way a nearby temple, called up the police on spotting the car in the shallow waters. “This passerby , Manoj Meher, called up the control room, suspecting that some crime had taken place,“ said the police officer.
Officials from Turbhe police station then helped get the stranded car removed from the spot. Enquiries led the police to the builder who has been facing a bout of depression due to the bad times in business.
Senior police inspector Shekhar Bagade said that the businessman was called to the police station in the morning. “He was still reeking of alcohol after his drinking binge the previous night,“ said Bagade. “He admitted that he was planning to jump into the creek but the stranded car somehow ended up making him change his plan.“
No case has been registered against the builder. “We let him go with a warning not to try such a stunt ever again,“ said another officer.
