NHAI invites bids, puts Bharat Mala in fast lane : The Times of India

New Delhi:

Government has fast-tracked preparatory work for Bharat Mala project with NHAI inviting bids for preparing the detailed project reports (DPRs) of over 3,500 km of roads along the border and coast lines.Sources said the entire network would be around 5,500 km and will cover stretches across 15 states.
Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry , Uttarakhand, Odisha, Gujarat and Punjab would get substantial portion of this network. “It has been assumed that in each stretch package 80% of road shall be two-lane with paved shoulders (two and half lanes) and 20% of length may be four-laned and any variation shall be dealt as per change in the scope of work as per the contract,“ the tender floated by NHAI said.

Sources said on certain strategic stretches government may build four-lane roads even if these stretches get less traffic.

According to NHAI, the main objective of the consultancy service is to establish the technical, economical, and financial viability of the project and prepare detailed project reports for rehabilitation upgrading and construction of the existing missing road to two or fourlane National Highways in the country .

The consultants will also find out financial viability of project for implementation and suggest the preferred mode on which the project has to be taken up.

Sources said since most of these identified stretches are unlikely to get enough traffic, the government will have to bear substantial part of this expenditure for this project. The overall investment is estimated around Rs 50,000 crore.

Officials said that the detailed project reports would be ready in 6-8 months and by that time road transport ministry would seek Cabinet approval for this project.“We plan to complete this project by 2019,“ said a government official.
